Healthy in Richardplatz I

Client/Funding Partner:

Neighborhood Management Richardplatz South / District Office Neukölln

Project Duration:
April 2016 – December 2018

Health and prevention are key issues in the Richardkiez neighborhood, particularly in connection with improving living conditions. Many residents face significant health risks and have specific health promotion needs. The goal of the project was to strengthen the health-promoting behavior of the residents in the Richardplatz South neighborhood. The project focused on nutrition and education, using a participatory approach with the setting-based method.

Initially, a networking structure called “Healthy in Richardkiez” was established in collaboration with existing institutions such as schools, kindergartens, the family center, and children, youth, and senior centers. The aim of this network was to create a common foundation for understanding how to develop residents’ skills, empower them to improve their own health and living conditions, and identify their specific needs. Several meetings were held with the directors of kindergartens and elementary schools in the neighborhood to determine which health-related activities, particularly in the areas of nutrition and physical activity, were already in place and which ones needed further development.

During the project, tailored physical activity and sports programs were offered for children, teenagers, and women. Nutritional counseling and cooking classes, such as “Healthy Cooking on a Budget,” were also provided. Additionally, a fitness trail was set up in the neighborhood in cooperation with a sports scientist. The annual Movement Festival was very well received. The project concluded with the publication of a children’s cookbook titled “Kids Cooking for Kids.”
